Commercial vehicle registrations: +9.6% in 2021; -8.4% in December
TOTAL NEW COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
In December, the EU commercial vehicle market contracted again, marking the sixth consecutive month of decline. Demand fell by 8.4% to 155,963 units, mainly due to a drop in new van sales. In fact, registrations of trucks and buses actually improved compared to December 2020. The region’s four major markets all posted drops, with the sharpest seen in Spain (-31.9%).
Overall in 2021 , commercial vehicle registrations in the European Union increased by 9.6% to reach 1,880,682 units, largely thanks to the low base recorded during the first half of 2020. Nevertheless, this full-year result remains far below the 2.1 million units registered in 2019, the year before the pandemic. With the exception of Spain (-2.8%), all major EU markets posted growth last year. Italy saw the highest percentage gain (+15.5%) followed by France (+7.8%), while registrations increased by only a modest 0.6% in Germany.

TOTAL NEW COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
In September 2021, commercial vehicle registrations in the EU decreased again (-12.3%), as the microchip shortage negatively affected sales volumes across all segments and in all major EU markets. Spain saw the strongest decline last month (‐26.7%), followed by Germany (‐18.2%), France (-16.1%) and Italy (‐10.4%).
Nine months into the year, demand for new commercial vehicles in the European Union remained positive (+19.1%), totalling 1.4 million units. Because of 2020’s low base of comparison, each of the four big EU markets recorded growth so far this year: Italy (+29.7%), France (+16.8%), Spain (+10.4%) and Germany (+8.5%).

TOTAL NEW COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
In November 2021 , new commercial vehicle registrations across the EU retreated (-14.7%) for the fifth consecutive month. The van segment’s double-digit drop weighed heavily on the overall result, as vans accounted for over 80% of total commercial vehicle sales in the European Union. The region’s four major markets posted strong declines last month, with the sharpest drop seen in Spain (-30.4%).
During the first 11 months of 2021, European Union commercial vehicle registrations remained up by 11.5%, still benefiting from 2020’s low base for comparison. The largest markets performed well so far this year, especially Italy (+17.6%) and France (+9.4%), although the percentage increases in Germany (+1.3%) and Spain (+0.6%) fell significantly compared to earlier months.r

In June 2021 , commercial vehicle registrations in the EU markets increased by 12.4% year-on-year to 185,573 units. All vehicle segments made a positive contribution to last month’s growth. Demand was largely driven by Central European countries (+43.4%), while only two of the four key Western European markets showed positive results: Germany (+28.5%) and Italy (+5.3%).
During the first half of the year , EU commercial vehicle registrations went up by 36.9% to 1 million units, reflecting the contribution of the big gains recorded between March and May. Most of the region’s markets posted double-digit percentage gains, including the four largest ones: Italy (+53.7%), Spain (+38.4%), France (+36.4%) and Germany (+21.7%).

Commercial vehicle registrations: +43.9% five months into 2021; +51.3% in May

In May 2021 , the EU commercial vehicle market enjoyed another month of strong gains on the back of a low base of comparison due to last year’s COVID-19 restrictions. New registrations increased by 51.3% to 165,363 units, more than 30,000 below pre-pandemic volume levels. Looking at the four key markets, Spain saw the highest percentage growth (+89.6%), followed by Italy (+51.3%), Germany (+46.4%) and France (+28.4%).
Five months into 2021 , demand for new commercial vehicles in the EU increased by 43.9%. The strong performance in May further improved year-to-date volumes, now counting 838,941 units. All four major EU markets improved their cumulative results: Italy (+69.5%), France (+55.2%), Spain (+51.9%) and Germany (+20.3%).

Total new commercial vehicles
In April 2021, the EU commercial vehicle market recorded an accelerated increase in new registrations of 179.2%, totalling 171,283 units. Last year’s very low sales base was the main reason behind this growth, as April 2020 was the first full month with coronavirus restrictions in place. As a result, many triple‐digit percentage gains were posted across the region last month, including three of the four key markets: Italy (+642.3%), Spain (+547.3%) and France (+412.9%). With a 60.0%
increase Germany also made a sizeable contribution to the EU’s overall performance.
Four months into 2021, demand for new commercial vehicles in the European Union expanded by 42.1%. Boosted by positive March and April results, total registrations reached 673,179 units so far this year. All key markets consolidated their year‐to‐date performances: Italy posted the highest percentage increase (+75.1%), followed by France (+62.9%), Spain (+43.8%) and Germany (+15.1%).

Total new commercial vehicles
In March 2021, new commercial vehicle registrations in the European Union jumped by 95.3% (primarily due to last year’s low base of comparison) to reach 204,046 units. Nearly all EU countries posted double or triple‐digit percentage gains, including the four major markets. Italy, among the first to impose restrictions as the pandemic emerged in 2020, recorded the highest increase (+215.3%), followed by France (+166.7%), Spain (+151.7%) and Germany (+34.2%).
During the first quarter of 2021, the EU commercial vehicle market expanded by 21.6%, with 501,703 units registered in total. These results were boosted by last month’s upturn. As a result, all key markets improved their cumulative performances, with France (+32.6%), Spain (+11.1%) and Germany (+4.9%) moving back into positive territory and Italy further consolidating its positive result (+38.0%).

Commercial veh icle registrations: ‐3.3% first two months of 2021; +1.2% in February

In February 2021 , new commercial vehicle registrations in the European Union increased by 1.2% to 156,444 units. With the exception of buses and coaches, all vehicle segments made a positive contribution to last month’s growth. Demand was largely driven by the Central European countries (+17.2%), given that registrations in all key Western European markets − except for Italy (+10.1%) −  contracted in February.
During the first two months of 2021 , the EU commercial vehicle market declined by 3.3%, with 297,651 units registered in total. Among the four key EU markets, Spain recorded the steepest decline (‐22.0%), followed by Germany (‐9.6%). In France, sales volumes were more or less similar to last year (‐0.2%), while Italy was the only major market to post an increase (+1.9%).
