The first quarter of 2025 proved challenging for the EU’s commercial vehicle market, marked by significant declines in key markets. Sluggish economic growth, lower prior order intake, and the complex regulatory landscape contributed to the business uncertainty.

New EU van sales fell by 12.2%, with the three largest markets contributing to the downturn. Italy recorded the steepest drop with a 15.2% decline, followed by France (-10.7%) and Germany (-10.7%). Conversely, Spain saw an increase in registrations, rising by 12.6%.

New EU truck registrations also fell by 16%, totalling 72,941 units. This decline was mainly driven by a 16.6% drop in heavy-truck sales, alongside a 12.5% decrease in medium-truck registrations. All major markets recorded declines, with Germany and France experiencing double-digit reductions of 25.4% and 17.6%, respectively. Spain and Italy also saw significant drops of 12.8% and 9.4%.

New EU bus sales declined by 1.8% compared to Q1 2024, totalling 8,674 units. Among major markets, Germany recorded a sharp decline (-15%), followed by Italy (-7.3%) and Spain (-0.5%). France posted a small increase (+0.1%), while markets like Sweden (+189.9%) and Greece (+187.6%) recorded notable growth.

New commercial vehicle registrations: vans +8.3%, trucks -6.3%, buses +9.2% in 2024

In 2024, new EU van sales increased by 8.3%, reaching 1,586,688 units, driven by positive results in all four key markets. Spain led with a remarkable 13.7% rise, followed by Germany at 8.4%, France at 1.1%, and Italy at 0.9%.

By contrast, new EU truck registrations declined by 6.3% in 2024, totalling 327,896 units. This reduction was primarily driven by an 8.5% drop in heavy-truck sales, partially mitigated by a 5.6% increase in medium-truck registrations. Among the four major markets, Germany (-6.9%), France (-2.9%), and Italy (-0.7%) experienced declines, while Spain recorded a notable 12% increase.

New EU bus sales rose by 9.2% in 2024 compared to 2023, totalling 35,579 units. Italy recorded a noteworthy double-digit 26.7% growth, Spain saw a 10.3% increase, and France grew by 2.2%. On the other hand, Germany experienced a 2% decline.

In the first nine months of 2024, new EU van sales increased by 8.5%, reaching 1,170,310 units, driven by positive results in all four key markets. Spain led with a remarkable 16.7%
rise, followed by Germany at 8.2%, Italy at 7.3%, and France at 5.8%.
By contrast, new EU truck registrations saw a 7.5% decline, totalling 249,708 units from January to September. This drop was driven by a 9.5% downturn in heavy-truck sales, while
medium trucks increased by a feeble 3%. Though Spain and Italy remained in positive territory with gains of 12% and 2.1%, respectively, this did not offset declines in Germany
(-7%) and France (-4.3%).
Bus sales rose by 16% compared to the first three quarters of 2023, totalling 27,400 units. All major markets recorded growth, particularly Spain (+21.8%) and Italy (+21%).

New commercial vehicle registrations: vans +15%, trucks +3%, buses +28.6% in H1 2024

In the first half of 2024 , new EU van sales increased by 15%, reaching 840,409 units, driven by double-digit growth in key markets. Germany led with a remarkable 19.3% rise, followed by Spain at 18.5%, Italy at 17.8%, and France at 10.5%.
New EU truck registrations saw a more modest increase of 3%, totalling 183,295 units from January to June. This growth was primarily driven by an 18.2% increase in medium-truck sales, while heavy trucks remained stable with a 0.3% increase. Spain and Italy led with double-digit gains of 21.7% and 10.5%, respectively, while Germany (+8.1%) and France (+5.5%) also posted growth.
Bus sales had a strong start to the year, with new EU registrations surging by 28.6% compared to the first half of 2023, totalling 20,370 units. All major markets recorded growth, particularly Italy (+44.6%), Spain (+24.2%), and Germany (+17.8%).

In the first quarter of 2024, new EU van sales rose by 12.6%, with nearly 400,000 units sold on the back of strong results in key markets. Italy led with a remarkable 19.4% growth. followed by Germany at 12.7%, Spain at 10.9%, and France at 8.7%. In contrast, new EU truck registrations fell by 4% to 85,296 units. This was mainly due to a 5.4% decrease in heavy-truck sales and despite a 5% growth in medium trucks. Germany and France reported slight decreases of 2.2% and 0.3%, respectively. Spain and Italy defied the trend with robust gains of 15.7% and 6.6%, respectively. Bus sales also had a positive start to the year, with new EU registrations surging by 23.3% compared to the first quarter of 2023, totalling 9,624 units. While sales dropped by 16.8% in France, three major markets grew substantially: Germany (+20%), Italy (+18.3%), and Spain (+7.6%).
