New commercial vehicle registrations: vans +14.6%, trucks +16.3%, buses +19.4% in 2023

In 2023, new EU van sales surged 14.6% to nearly 1.5 million units, driven by strong performances in key EU markets. Italy led the way with a remarkable 22.7% growth, followed closely by Spain at 22%, Germany at 12.1%, and France at 8.9%.
Similarly, the new EU truck registrations grew by a substantial 16.3% to 346,986 units. Germany led the pack with 94,820 units sold, reflecting a significant 24.4% increase. Other major EU markets experienced double-digit growth, including Spain at 22.3%, Italy at 11.4%, and France at 11.3%.
New EU bus registrations grew by a remarkable 19.4%198.4% growth compared to 2022, totalling 32,593 units. Looking at major EU markets, Italy and Spain experienced a noteworthy 56.2% growth. The largest and second-largest bus markets, Germany and France, grew by a solid 12.5% and 4.1%, respectively.

New commercial vehicle registrations: vans +14.3%, trucks +23%, buses +18.5% in the first three quarters of 2023

In the first three quarters of 2023 , new EU van sales increased by 14.3% to 1 million units. This positive result was primarily driven by solid performance in major EU markets, with Spain (+20.5%), Germany (+18.2%), and Italy (+16.7%) recording double-digit growth.
New EU truck registrations saw an even more significant surge, with a 23% increase during the first three quarters, totalling 268,766 units. Germany led in sales volumes, with 75,241 registered units, a substantial 31.2% increase. Other major EU markets also grew significantly, including Spain (+23.8%), Italy (+17%), France (+15.6%), and Poland (+10.9%).
New EU bus registrations also experienced significant growth during the first three quarters of the year. EU registrations grew by 18.5% year-over-year to 23,645 units. In terms of volume, France led the way with 4,735 units sold, a 9.1% increase. Italy (+65.9%) and Spain (+58.1%) also expanded considerably.

In the first half of 2023 , new EU van sales increased by 11.6% to 725,418 units as supply chain issues eased. Spain and Germany substantially contributed to this increase as van sales rose by 26.6% and 15.5%, respectively. Sales in France also modestly increased by 3.6%, totalling 189,948 units.
New EU truck registrations recorded a significant increase of 20%, totalling 179,508 units. Almost all EU markets saw double-digit percentage gains, including the four largest: Germany (+24.8%), France (+12.3%), Italy (+12.6%), and Poland (+10.8%).
New EU bus registrations also had a solid first half of 2023, as sales rose 15% to 14,781 units. In terms of sales volumes, France led the way with 2,982 units sold, representing a 22.3% increase. Other major markets also reported substantial growth: Italy (+62.6%), Spain (+58.7%), and Germany (+27.8%).
Vans
In the first half of 2023, diesel remained the top choice, accounting for 83.4%, lower than the 87% share in 2022. However, alternative powertrains are gradually increasing in popularity, resulting in a modest shift in market share. Notably, the share of electrically chargeable vans increased to 7%. This represents a two-fold increase (+100.4%), totalling 50,708 units, primarily driven by triple-digit growth in the first and third largest markets: France (+118.9%) and Spain (+138%). In contrast, hybrid-electric van registrations declined by 7.2% to 16,602 units, representing a 2.3% share. Other fuel types, such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas, increased by 26.5% and now represent 1.3% of the market.
Trucks
In the first half of 2023, diesel dominated the market, accounting for 95.6% of new truck registrations. Notably, there was a 19.2% increase in diesel truck sales, with several member states reporting double-digit gains, including Germany (+23.7%). Battery-electric truck sales surged by 351.5%, reaching 2,384 units. Despite this remarkable growth, this fuel type represents only 1.3% market share but is still an improvement from 0.4% recorded last year.
Buses
EU sales of new electrically chargeable buses increased by 33.9% to reach 2,132 units, representing a market share of 14.4% in the first half of 2023, compared to 12.4% in 2022. Among the bloc’s three largest markets, Spain grew impressively by 755.9%, followed by France (+89.9%) and Germany (+18.1%). Hybrid-electric buses maintained momentum (sales up 160.5%), with market share more than doubling compared to the first half of 2022 (from 6.2% to 14%). Significant growth in the second and third largest markets, France (+886%) and Spain (+180.3%), contributed to this result. Together with Germany, France and Spain account for 82.4% of all EU hybrid bus registrations. Despite the shift to electric and hybrid models, diesel buses still retain the largest market share at 63%.

In the first quarter of 2023, new van registrations in the EU saw a notable increase of 7.7% to 355,553 units, mainly due to last year’s low basis for comparison. Spain recorded a substantial growth of 31.2%, reaching 34,200 units. Germany and Italy saw more modest increases (+9.2% and +7%, respectively). In contrast, France recorded a decline of 3% but still represented the highest registration volumes at 87,842 units.
The first quarter also saw a significant increase in new truck sales in the EU (+19.4%), reaching 86,455 units. All member states except Denmark (-8.9%) recorded substantial growth, including the four largest markets: Germany (+20.9%), France (+12.4%), Poland (+19.1%), and Italy (+9.5%).
New medium and heavy buses increased by 15.5% to 7,309 units during the first quarter of 2023. France had the highest volumes, with 24,107 units, noting a gain of 23.5%. Other major markets reported sizeable gains, including Spain (+68.7%), Italy (+64.1%), and Germany (+16.2%).
